Big Sky Open for Skiing and Snowboarding June 14, 2001
First Ski Resort to Open
for the 2001-2002 Season
BIG SKY, Mont. — The
first turns on new snow for the 2001-2002 ski season in the Northern Hemisphere
will be at Big Sky Resort, today. As
Big Sky prepared for its summer season a spring storm left nearly three feet of
snow on the mountain prompting an opening for skiing and snowboarding off of
the Gondola.
The Gondola
will operate up Lone Peak accessing Mr. K for Thursday. Over 1,500 feet out of Big Sky's 4,350
vertical feet will be open for riders.
Many will
remember Big Sky was the first resort to open in the Rockies on the October 16,
2001 with a similar three-foot snowstorm.
Lift tickets
will be sold for $15 and restaurants and retail shops will be open. Call the snowphone at 406-995-5900 for
detailed updates. Or visit Big Sky's
website at www.bigskyresort.com
When the snow
clears Big Sky will continue to offer Gondola rides accessing a picnic area in
the bowl, several hiking and mountain biking trails and a new disc golf
course. The area also features an
Arnold Palmer designed golf course, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and
world class fly-fishing.
Big Sky Resort
is a destination ski and summer resort located in Southwest Montana near
Yellowstone National Park. The mountain
offers 4,350 vertical feet on over 3,600 skiable acres covered with over 400
inches of snow annually. Projected
opening date for the ski season is November 22, 2001.
