Big Sky Open for Skiing and Snowboarding June 14, 2001

First Ski Resort to Open for the 2001-2002 Season

 

BIG SKY, Mont.The first turns on new snow for the 2001-2002 ski season in the Northern Hemisphere will be at Big Sky Resort, today.  As Big Sky prepared for its summer season a spring storm left nearly three feet of snow on the mountain prompting an opening for skiing and snowboarding off of the Gondola.

 

The Gondola will operate up Lone Peak accessing Mr. K for Thursday.  Over 1,500 feet out of Big Sky's 4,350 vertical feet will be open for riders.

 

Many will remember Big Sky was the first resort to open in the Rockies on the October 16, 2001 with a similar three-foot snowstorm.

When the snow clears Big Sky will continue to offer Gondola rides accessing a picnic area in the bowl, several hiking and mountain biking trails and a new disc golf course.  The area also features an Arnold Palmer designed golf course, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and world class fly-fishing.

 

Big Sky Resort is a destination ski and summer resort located in Southwest Montana near Yellowstone National Park.  The mountain offers 4,350 vertical feet on over 3,600 skiable acres covered with over 400 inches of snow annually.  Projected opening date for the ski season is November 22, 2001.

 

Big Sky is owned by Boyne USA, a Michigan-based family owned international corporation that owns several mountain and golf resort properties across the North America.  These include: Crystal Mountain in Washington; Brighton in Utah; Cypress Mountain near Vancouver, British Columbia; Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands and Bay Harbor Resort Facilities in Michigan.
